Obscure Joys: Original, one-of-a-kind dioramas

In my other life, I make dioramas. I’ve been making them for years. I exhibited them for the first time the year I turned 30. I put them all over the giant apartment I lived in with three roommates and invited everyone I knew to come over. I set out little arrangements of snacks. My boss brought her husband. The person I was dating brought flowers. I still have a picture of myself from that day, all smiles but with really sweaty armpits.

My early dioramas (I call them my “blue period”) were full of punny captions. I took great effort in coming up with an exhibit full of wordplay. I was in love with my own cleverness. (Okay, I still am.) It’s an engine inside of me that could run at a pretty loud hum, and once every few years, it does.

This time around, there are no clever captions. Just one or two objects, hanging out on their own. It’s up to you to figure out what they’re saying—to you, to each other, to themselves.

There are two kinds of dioramas to choose from. The first set is called “Me, Myself and (eye)” and they are 3.5”x3.5” square. The second set is called “Conversations with Strangers” and they are 4.5”x6” with a plexiglas cover that slides in and out. The backs of each diorama can easily accommodate hardware to hang them on a wall, but they are also perfectly wonderful for display on shelves, nightstands, or windowsills.

The smaller dioramas are available for $20 plus shipping. The larger dioramas are $35 plus shipping.
