step one

Soften the blow when the blow is not soft. Put on a thicker skin. Take it off.
Square with the possibility some things might not change. Lean in
as if they might. Fix eyes on the road, gaze pointed on the yellow hyphens.
Merge and yield and stop for construction. Drown everything out with noise,
then surface, clean and sweet as a napping baby. Imagine a fresh start
from the same old story. Keep limber. Wait and rest and hydrate and hope.
Watch the sky, sodden and mysterious. Consider the trees as if
they were dancing, or waving, or introducing themselves. Introduce yourself,
and wave, and dance, and do it when you can’t see 10 feet ahead. Trust what is
not yet visible. Begin to be visible. Begin somewhere.
